Concrete Polishing, Sealing and Staining in Florida
Concrete polishing and burnishing is a great alternative to epoxy or urethane flooring, especially when a decorative, low maintenance solution is required for industrial uses such as a warehouse, show room, retail premises or school.
The process of concrete polishing not only provides a high gloss, attractive surface but also actually strengthens the concrete, making it more durable and adding years to its life. Concrete polishing makes the floor abrasion and chemical resistant, able to withstand the highest traffic and still look attractive. The process therefore both protects your concrete floor while also enhancing its appearance.
SHOTBLAST SERVICES is one of only a few Florida based installers who holds the CPAA Certified Craftsman Level designation as issued by the CPAA.
The Concrete Polishing Process
The process of polishing concrete involves first literally polishing the floor with coarse metal-bond diamonds, the hardest substance known to man, to remove imperfections and obtain a completely smooth, unmarked surface. A liquid densifier is then applied to the concrete, which hardens it, making it stronger and absorbing the dust produced during polishing. The floor is then polished with progressively finer grit resin-bond diamonds to develop shine. Resin grits correlate to shine. A #400 to #800 grit polish is a traditional warehouse retail floor like Home Depot or Lowe's. Typically glossy finish polished floors are #1500 up to #6000 grit. The densifier can then be reapplied and the floor re-polished until the required level of shine is achieved. SHOTBLAST SERVICES uses superior lithium densifying for results of the highest standard.
If desired, a dye or stain can also be applied to the concrete with the densifier, so that it is colored to suit your building and application. Finally, a protective sealant layer is applied and this is burnished into the concrete, providing maximal protection against chemicals and abrasions.
This entire process results in a floor that is both functional and attractive, that will last for years to come with minimal maintenance.
Is Polished Concrete Safe?
Although it may seem that a polished concrete floor would be slippery and dangerous for employees and clients, in fact it is no more slippery than dry, clean concrete surface. If you do need extra protection, an anti-slip concrete conditioner can be applied as a final step. However, even without this, a regular polished concrete floor still meets anti-slip requirements laid out by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
Another big advantage of concrete polishing is that it is an extremely environmentally friendly process. This makes it a great choice for companies wishing to use more "green" processes or for places such as schools where children will be in contact with the surface. The application process is entirely odor-free and releases no harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs), so it is safe for employees or customers to be in the building while the process is taking place. SHOTBLAST SERVICES's concrete polishing system is also fully accredited by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), an internationally-recognized mark of environmentally-friendly excellence. You can therefore choose concrete polishing for your building safe in the knowledge that you are harming neither the environment nor the health of those around you through your industrial flooring choice.
